Day 1: Saigon - U Minh Thuong
Depart from Saigon, travel by car down to the Mekong Delta area. The approximately 300 km trip from Saigon to the forest takes you around seven to eight hours drive crossing most of the delta provinces such as Vinh Long, Can Tho, Dong Thap. The trip is quite lengthy and need to cross two river ferries (Vam Cong & Tac Cau Ferry) but it is worth to see the landscapes on the way as well as people daily lives on the way. Lunch en route.
Check in the guest house & restaurant (Huong Tram) nearby the forest and get ready for the trip into the forest in the next day. The guest house at the forest is of basic condition with mattress, air conditioner and mosquito net. Simple breakfasts are served with either noodles or bread with eggs. You can also take your own sleeping bags for a comfortable sleep.
Alternatively you can travel by early airplane from Saigon at 6.45 AM to Rach Gia ( 50 minutes flight) then by car from the airport to the forest (60 km) with around 2 hour drive.

Day 2: Discover U Minh Thuong
This morning we wake up early and have a little walk toward the forest. Check in then take ‘vo lai’ - a kind of speedboat that has a propeller attached to a long drive shaft extending behind the boat - into the forest where our discovery starts.
The national park is one of only a few protected tropical mangrove forests left in the world. It contains 252 species of flora, 202 different insect species, 24 animal species and 185 kinds of birds, many of which are rare, some have been listed in the red book.
There is also a 44-hectare bird sanctuary with more than 70,000 birds.
Our full day adventure takes us to visit cajuput forests, situated on a stratum of muddy coal (Some of them are still recovering after a big fire in 2002), the wet lands are full of water lilies and another type of water flower called convolvulus; packs of boars feed during the day and forest will reveal amazing birdlife and monkey colonies. You can even get close to the bird nests and see their eggs and small birds waiting for their mothers bring foods back for them.
Lunch at the restaurant at the forest entrance with local specialties such as fish and forest vegetable. After lunch take the boat to visit the bat area where several giant bats can be found here, some with arm-length wings and size as large as medium size chickens.
Afternoon, check out the forest and head back to Rach Gia town for a comfortable sleep.
